Obituary of Joseph Tompkins

Joseph Henry Tompkins, Jr. Mr. Tompkins, 60, of Charlotte, died Friday, August 28, 2009 at Presbyterian Hospital. He was born on July 6, 1949, in Charleston, SC, son of Jane M. Tompkins and the late Joseph Henry Tompkins, Sr. Mr. Tompkins was raised in Charlotte. He was a proud veteran of the Vietnam War being recognized many times. Mr. Tompkins was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman?s Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device 60, Bronze Star Medal, and Air Medal. He later volunteered at the U.S.O. and an avid rugby fan and player. Mr. Tompkins also loved the Panthers. Survivors include his mother, Jane M. Tompkins; sisters, Lucia Tompkins and Joy Palmer; niece, Lucia Palmer; nephew, Brian Palmer; aunt, Anne Darracott; and uncle, Charles McCoy. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, August 31, 2009 at Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1609 East 5th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Inurnment will be private. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society 6000 Fairview Rd.
