Obituary of William Grist

Honorable William Taylor Grist Judge William T. Grist, 88, of Charlotte, NC died on September 10, 2009 at his residence. He was born on December 26, 1920 in Lenoir, NC, son of the late, Frank Davis Grist and Jessie Deal Grist. Judge Grist was educated in the North Carolina Public Schools and graduated from Hudson High School. He then went on to serve our country in the United States Army during World War II, in the North Africa, Italian and Southern France campaigns. After his honorable discharge, he attended Lenoir Rhyne College and Duke Law School on the G.I. Bill. Judge Grist then came to Charlotte as an attorney and in 1961 was appointed Mecklenburg County District Court Judge and in 1968, Governor Dan K. Moore appointed him to the North Carolina Superior Court where he retired from in 1985. He was a member of the Charlotte and North Carolina Rose Society where he was awarded many ribbons and prizes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Walter C. Grist and Thomas N. Grist. Judge Grist is survived by his wife, Jane Kidd Grist; sons, William F. Grist and his wife Linda, J. Lawrence Grist and his wife, Jean and Thomas E. Grist and his wife, Joan; grandchildren, Daniel Grist, Taylor Grist, Meredith Grist, Martin Grist, Carson Grist, Cameron Grist, Garrett Grist, William Grist and John Grist; nieces, Jean Marie Grist Franklin and Neile Sue Grist. Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Monday, September 14, 2009 at Mouzon United Methodist Church, 3100 Selwyn Ave. Charlotte, NC 28209. The interment will be private. The family will receive friends Sunday, September 13, 2009 from 4:00 until 6:00 PM at Hankins and Whittington, 1111 East Blvd. Charlotte, NC 28203. Memorials may be made to Holy Angels 6600 Wilkinson Blvd. Belmont, NC 28012 or to the charity of your choice.
