Obituary of John Knox

JOHN KNOX Mr Knox, age 82 of Rock Hill, SC and former 56-year resident of the Steele Creek community in Charlotte died October 26, 2009 in Rock Hill. He was born October 18, 1927 in St Peter's Hospital in downtown Charlotte, son of the late Starr Neely Knox and Ella May Connelly Knox. He grew up in Atlanta, GA and graduated from Berryhill High School in Mecklenburg County with the Class of 1944. Following high school, he went to work for the War Department, Adjutant General's Office in Charlotte. Following this, he was employed by the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County as a draftsman. His last employment was with Qualex Corp of Charlotte, where he retired. Mr. Knox was active in the Steele Creek Volunteer Fire Dept where he served as secretary-treasurer and received the first "distinguished service award." He was also a former county fire commissioner. A lover of antique and classic cars, he once owned a collection of Edsel automobiles and was a member of the Horseless Carriage Club of America. He was a member of Steele Creek Presbyterian Church since 1940, where he served two terms as deacon. He had close ties to First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, where he was baptized in 1928. After moving to Rock Hill, Mr. Knox attended Bethel Presbyterian Church in Clover, SC. Mr. Knox was predeceased by his brother, Col James S. Knox (USAF, Ret). He is survived by his sister-in-law, Rue Alexander Knox of Tucson, AZ; nephew, Col James S. Knox, Jr. (USAF, Ret) of Tucson; niece, Mrs Ruann Knox Hampson of Kernersville, NC; cousins, Mrs Florence Burnite and Mrs Jane Reynolds of Tampa, FL; John Connelly of Rising Sun, MD; Robert Knox of Chester, SC; and a great niece and three great nephews. Viewing will be from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm Friday, October 30 at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service. A graveside service and interment will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, October 31, 2009 at the Connelly family plot in Elmwood Cemetery in downtown Charlotte within sight of St Peter's hospital where Mr. Knox entered this life. Dr William P. Wood, senior pastor of First Presbyterian Church will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made in memory of John Knox to any of the following: First Presbyterian Church, Television Ministry, 200 W Trade St, Charlotte, NC 28202; Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, Cemetery Fund, 7407 Steele Creek Rd, Charlotte, NC 28217; or Bethel Presbyterian Church, 2445 Hwy 557, Clover, SC 29710.
