Obituary of Thomas Hauch

THOMAS WRAY HAUCH, M.D. Dr. Thomas Wray Hauch died Monday, November 9, 2009, at his home in Charlotte in the love and care of his family after a battle with cancer at age 63. A graduate of Duke University Medical Center, he worked in Charlotte as an oncologist since 1977. He founded his own practice, Carolinas Cancer Care, in 1994. He was always upbeat and positive and was known for his unique sense of humor. It was his life?s work to be a source of comfort and hope for his patients and their families through every stage of treatment. He will be remembered not only as a great doctor, but as a good friend. Born in Rochester, MN, Dr. Hauch graduated from Pomona College in Claremont, CA where he was raised. He attended medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago and then completed his residency and fellowships at Duke University Medical Center. He was a member of honor society Alpha Omega Alpha, the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Clinical Oncology and was a board member of the North Carolina Oncology Society. Dr. Hauch took great pleasure in mentoring medical students from the University of the South. He also was active with local and national legislation as an advocate for cancer patients. Dr. Hauch pursued many varied interests. He was an avid pilot who also enjoyed skiing, sailing, fishing and playing golf. Dr. Hauch was particularly proud of earning his Eagle Scout rank and of climbing Mt. Whitney, the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states. He was a member of Myers Park Country Club and loved Bald Head Island. Dr. Hauch took great joy in his family, and is survived by his loving wife Karon; father Edward Hauch of Pomona, CA; daughters Kimberly Hauch LaMore of Vienna, VA, Kathryn Hauch of Charlotte, son-in-law David LaMore and grandson Colby, stepsons Jamie Watts and Michael Watts, both of Charlotte and brother Dr. Richard Hauch of Sacramento, CA. He is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Jean Hauch and sister, Sandra Hauch. Funeral services for Dr. Hauch will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 13, at First Baptist Church, 301 South Davidson Street, Charlotte with the Reverend Dr. Mark Harris officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Boulevard.
