Roslyn, I have many happy memories of your dad. My daddy owned the barber shop next door. I always went in to visit. My mother, now 100, sends her thoughts also.

Alwyn and my grandfather, Joe Tamsberg, remained good lifelong friends. When Joe told Alywn of my plans to attend medical school at MUSC, Alywn became a 'cheerleader' for me. I would receive notes of encouragement from him every few months. Sometimes his correspondence would include 'smart pills' (aka, M&Ms!) and other times he would include a check for spending money as a reward for my hard studies. After my first of four years of medical school, he addressed his next note like this: "Dear 1/4 Doctor Wise..." His letters were so clever and fun to read. He shared many kind words, funny jokes and old newspaper clippings with me during my years at MUSC. When I visited Georgetown, my grandfather and I would stop by Alwyn's store on Front Street to visit him in person. Though retired, he was often found spending time there in the mornings. He was a generous and kind man. I'm glad I had the opportunity to know him. I always appreciated his support.

Dear Frances, Roslyn,Steven, and Family,My sincere condolences go out to you. I have felt so sad since learning about Alwyn. He was the last of the "elder" Goldsteins. I always loved talking to him and learning so much about the Goldsteins. He was very special and very well loved. My parents adored him as I did. I have always felt the Goldsteins were the sweetest, kindest, and most decent people I have ever known. Alwyn will be missed by many who loved him dearly. My love to you all. Renee

I will always fondly remember Alwyn. With his passing it feels like the end of an era for the Goldstein family. Please accept my condolences to Frances and his children and grandchildren. Alwyn lived a long and happy life. No one could ask for more.

Mr. Goldstein gave me my first "real" job when I was a Sophomore in High School (1957). It involved working after school and all day on Saturday's. The part of the job I liked best was interacting with the public. Thank you for your kindness to me and to all of the other young men you helped to teach the disciplines of work and responsibility. When I visit Georgetown and drive by the old store, it brings back so many good memories.
