Obituary of Jane Hodges

Jane Louise Toepper Hodges Mrs. Hodges, age 99, died Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at her home at Elmcroft Assisted Living. Jane was a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Dr. F. Allen Hodges and her sister, charlotte Toepper Crocker. She is survived by her three daughters, Mary Lou Hindley and her husband, Scott of Charlotte, Ruth Ann Davis and her husband, Joe of Bakersfield, CA and Dorothy Jane Fleming and her husband, Larry of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Linda Booth and her husband, John, Jim Hindley, Joey Davis, Shanon Davis and her husband, Mark, Jennifer Smith and her husband, Matthew; five great-grandchildren, Susanna, Laurie and Janie Booth, Chloe and Parker Smith; and several nieces and nephews. Jane was born in Washington D.C., daughter of Mary Saffell Toepper and Charles Toepper . She graduated from Central High School and received her nursing degree from Garfield Hospital, with additional training at John Hopkins in Baltimore, MD. She and Allen Hodges were married on Christmas Day, 1934. Our mother loved children. She taught the kindergarten Sunday School Class at Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Church for 50 years. She also babysat for several families who continue to love and remember her. She was fortunate to live in the family home in Bethesda, MD for 65 years prior to moving to Charlotte in 2000. Her sunny outlook on life was an inspiration to all who knew her. A service of celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday in the Francis Chapel of Myers Park United Methodist Church with the Reverend Shane Page officiating. The family will receive friends follow the memorial service. Mrs. Hodges? family especially thanks Elmcroft Assisted Living, Myers Park United Methodist Church, and Hospice and Palliative Care fro their beautiful love and care for their Mom.
