Obituary of George Kantsios

George Kantsios George Kantsios passed away Monday morning, January 30, 2012, due to complications from chemotherapy. George was born in Charlotte on September 16, 1957 and attended Myers Park High School. He graduated from UNCC and was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity. He worked for First Union and Bank of America during his career and was very involved in the community. George was the epitome of strength, courage, and faith. He had many challenges during his life, but rose to the challenge each and every time. His friends, family and community were dear to his heart. George served on the Board of Directors of the UNC Charlotte Alumni Association; a leader of the Belk College of Business Alumni Interest Group for many years, and served as a board member and treasurer of the Parish Council of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral where he also taught Sunday school and coached girls basketball. He also was involved with the Chamber of Commerce and the Charlotte Jaycees. Some of his challenges included developing Alopecia (loss of hair) as a child, which had a great affect on him. It helped shape his character and strength. As an adult, both kidneys failed and he had to endure hours of dialysis each week for eight years. In October, 2010, George was blessed with a kidney transplant. A number of relapses occurred, but he finally prevailed. In April 2011, George was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). During all these obstacles in his life, George maintained a positive attitude and good sense of humor that made him one of those special people on earth. George is survived by his brothers Tom Kantsios and wife Stephanie of Atlanta; Nick Kantsios and his wife Cindy of Charlotte; and, nieces and nephews Emily, William, Maliyah, Grant, and Anna. The family would like to thank Dr. Mahony, Lisa and all those at Carolina?s Hemotology; Drs. Hart, Chuang, Fotiadis, and all those at Metrolina Nephrology; all the special doctors and nurses at Carolina?s Medical Hospital. A Trisagion (visitation) service will be held Friday, February 3, 2012, at 7:00 PM and the funeral Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 11:00 AM, both at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 600 East Blvd, Charlotte, NC.
