Obituary of Jack Heberlig

Jack Clarence Heberlig Jack Clarence Heberlig, age 76 of Charlotte, NC, died peacefully on Friday August 17, 2012. Jack was born on August 22, 1935 in Oakville, PA, the son of Clarence and Mary Heberlig. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ruth Hoover Heberlig, two children and their spouses, Susan and Bill Ford of Charlotte and Jack and Jennifer Heberlig of Campinas, Brazil, a granddaughter Sarah Heberlig of Brookfield, CT, a sister Dolores Loy, and a brother, Edgar Heberlig, and 4 nephews. Jack was an Eagle Scout, and graduated from Shippensburg University in 1957. Jack joined the NASA Langley Research Center as an Aeronautical Research Engineer. He was one of the original 35 persons recruited to implement a Manned Satellite Project in 1957. In 1961, Jack was named one of the Outstanding Young Men in America by the Saturday Evening Post. Jack was instrumental in space exploration at NASA from Project Mercury through the Space Shuttle Program. Following his twenty years with NASA, he worked with IBM, MITRE Corporation, and retired from Lockheed Martin in 2003 when he and Ruth moved to Charlotte. Jack was a member of the Men?s Bible Class and Men in Mission at St. Luke?s Lutheran Church. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at St. Luke?s Lutheran Church, 3200 Park Road. Visitation will follow the service in the church Parish Hall. The family requests memorials be made in memory of Jack Heberlig to St. Luke?s Lutheran Church, PO Box 11063, Charlotte, NC 28220.
