Obituary of Matthew Edwards

Matthew Alvin Edwards, Jr. Mr. Edwards, 92, of Rock Hill, SC, formerly of Charlotte, NC died peacefully on June 8, 2009 at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, S.C. where he had resided at Westminster Towers since 2003. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at Providence Baptist Church, 4921 Randolph Road, Charlotte, NC, at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, June 10, 2009 with Dr. Al Cadenhead officiating. Interment will precede the service at Flint Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, 269 Flint Hill Road, Fort Mill, SC. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service at Providence Baptist Church. Born October 15, 1916, in Pineville, NC, Mr. Edwards was the son of Matthew Alvin Edwards and Mary McGinn Edwards. Upon graduation from Berryhill High School in Charlotte, NC, where he was President of his Senior Class, Al joined Mill Power Supply Company at age 18 and retired as Assistant to the Executive Vice President of Duke Power Company in 1980 after 45 years of service. He also was stationed in Fort Worth, TX while serving in the Army Air Corps. A1 married Dell Garrison on December 13, 1941 and they celebrated sixty-six wonderful years together before her death in November 2008. They traveled with good friends in their retirement years and enjoyed their lives together with their three sons and their families, especially at the family retreat on Variety Lane at Lake Wylie. Mr. Edwards will be remembered for "getting things done", "doing what's right no matter what" and teaching his boys "how to live". As a charter member of Providence Baptist Church he served there in many capacities and enjoyed great friendships. Al is survived by sons, Al III and his wife Martha Gray, Arnold and his wife Ann, and Carlton, all of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren Katherine Redwine and her husband, Craighill of Charlotte; Lindsay Connor and husband, Brian of Savannah, Georgia; and Sydney Edwards Cartiff and her husband, Brian. of Clayton, NC; great-grandsons, Sam and Matthew Connor of Savanna, Georgia; and brother, Richard Kendrick Edwards of Fort Mill, SC. Preceding him in death was a brother, William McGinn Edwards. The Edwards family is grateful for the care extended to their Dad by the staff at Westminster Towers and Piedmont Medical Center and especially for Ms. Linda Brackett, who assisted Mr. Edwards every day the past several years.
