Obituary of Mavis Thompson

Mavis Sykes Thompson Mavis Thompson, 82, died Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Brighton Gardens. She was born February 22, 1927 in Wilmington, NC, a daughter of the late Leo Empie Sykes and Lalia Margie Williams Sykes. Mavis was a graduate of Wake Forest University and a biology teacher for 28 years with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. She retired in 1992 from South Mecklenburg High School where she was a cheerleader coach for many years. She loved attending the football and basketball games and organized the annual luncheon for the retired teachers of South Mecklenburg High. Mavis was a passionate volunteer with the American Red Cross in Charlotte and was a blood donor record holder. She was a faithful member and supporter of Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she was a charter member. Mavis had a brilliant mind and strong body and fought Alzheimer?s with dignity and grace for 15 years. She is now reunited in heaven with her beloved grandson, Cameron Patrick Cullen. Mavis is survived by two daughters, Susan Rebecca ?Becky? Thompson of Raleigh, NC and Nancy A. Cullen of Fort Mill, SC; one son, Michael Patrick Thompson and his wife Janice of Denver, NC; one brother, Lewis W. Sykes and his wife Virginia of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Brandon Cullen, Calli Thompson, and Rachel Thompson. A memorial service celebrating the life of Mavis will be held at 12:00 Noon on Friday, June 19, 2009 in the chapel of Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Joan H. Watson officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service in the church parlor. Graveside services will be held Saturday on Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington, NC.
