Obituary of Marianna Dyer

Marianna Cobb Dyer Mrs. Dyer, 85, of Charlotte, died peacefully on July 4, 2009 at Elmcroft Assisted Living. She was born to the late Lloyd Cecil and Nell Hester Cobb, October 11, 1923, in Chimney Rock, NC. Her father served as the town?s first mayor, and the family resided in Chimney Rock until relocating to Charlotte in 1929 when Marianna was six years old. Marianna graduated from Central High School in Charlotte, and returned to western North Carolina to attend Asheville College in 1941. Stylish, savvy and sophisticated, Marianna?s natural ambition led to a successful career with the Field Operations Bureau of the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, DC for over 35 years. She was admired by friends, co-workers, and family for her sharp intellect and keen wit. She retired in 1978, and relocated to Charlotte, NC in 1990 to take care of her ailing mother. Marianna enjoyed reading, watching old movies, and playing with her dog Scooter. Although she loved all animals, dogs were her favorite. She was fond of museums, and had a particular fascination with natural science and dinosaurs. In addition to her parents, Marianna is preceded in death by her brother Donald Cecil Cobb. Marianna is survived by her niece, Candice Cobb and partner, Martha McMillan of Hillsborough, NC; her sister-in-law, Vivian Cobb, of Hillsborough, NC; and her best friends, Mary Alice Cox and Jane Cannon, of Charlotte. The family would like to thank Marianna?s extended family at Elmcroft of Little Avenue for 10 years of compassionate care and support. Thank you also to the wonderful caregivers at Hospice & Palliative Care, Charlotte Region. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Best Friends Animal Society (www.bestfriends.org). A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte.
