Obituary of Richard Boyd

Richard Parks Boyd ?Dick? Mr. Boyd, 80, a lifelong Charlottean, passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at his home. He was born on October 2, 1928, in Charlotte and was the son of the late Robert Joseph Boyd and Lois Stewart Boyd. Dick was a graduate of Central High School and Clemson University. At Clemson, he earned a B.S. in Textile Management. He was a member of the Phi Psi Honorary Textile fraternity and of the Senior R.O.T.C. Drill Platoon. He graduated as a distinguished military student and was called into military service upon graduation. Dick accepted a Regular Army Commission and served with the 1st Infantry Division in Germany, as part of the Allied Occupation Forces. After his service commitment, Dick?s entire professional career encompassed the sales and marketing of textile dyestuffs, retiring from Crompton and Knowles Corporation in 1992. He was a member of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists. Dick?s hobbies included gardening, surf fishing, and enjoying time with his family and grandchildren. He will be remembered by all as a gifted story teller who would entertain his loved ones with humorous tales of his escapades in the service and his fond memories of family times at the beach. Per Dick?s request, his ashes will be strewn in the ocean at their family home-away-from home, Holden Beach, N.C. Dick was preceded in death by his wife, the former Elizabeth ?Betsy? Davis. He is survived by their three devoted children: Katherine Curtis and husband William, Richard Boyd, Jr. and his wife Sharon, and David Boyd and his wife Stephanie. Survivors also include their five beloved grandchildren: Elizabeth Curtis, William Curtis, Jr., Trish Boyd, Emily Boyd, and Spencer Boyd, and his sister-in-law Harriet Davis Payne and husband Gene Payne. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Dr. William Cappleman for the tremendous personal care and attention he always provided. Respects can be paid at Hankins and Whittington, Dilworth Chapel, 1111 East Boulevard from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, 2009. There will also be an informal ?Gathering of Remembrance? from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the home of Rick and Sharon Boyd. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Charlotte, 2700 Toomey Ave, Charlotte, NC 28203 or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)in care of Linda Tiramani, 520 8th Ave 7th Floor, New York, NY 10018.
