David, Jr., Shep, and family--I only last evening learned of Dave's death. We chatted a few months back when he called to thank me for some kind words about his writing in one of my columns in "Sporting Classics." I simply indicated what was the flat-out truth--I said nothing that his literary efforts did not richly deserve. He was a true sporting gentleman of the old school, and I cherish the moments we spent together, the letters we exchanged, and the fact that I was privileged to call the man friend. You can take some modicum of comfort in knowing that his was a full, rich life lived well. Jim Casada

Even though it is the inevitable destination for us all, I was saddened to read of this remarkable gentleman's recent death. I feel privileged to have spent a brief, but very special bit of time with him and his family. May they all find warm, fond moments remembering his wit, humor, and sensitivity.
