Obituary of Whitten Scholtz

Whitten Walter Scholtz Jr. Mr. Scholtz, 92, of Charlotte, NC, died Monday, September 21, 2009 at Sharon Towers. He was born in Charlotte on November 5, 1916, son of the late Whitten Walter Scholtz Sr. and Lessie Drye Scholtz. He met his wife of 65 years, the late Roma Sorrentino, on a blind date during WWII while he was a Captain in the Army assigned to Company A. His unit?s assignment was to guard President Franklin D. Roosevelt while he was in New York. Mr. and Mrs. Scholtz married and lived in the Vanderbilt Mansion, officers quarters, in Hyde Park, New York. Mr. Scholtz, was a long time member of Myers Park Country Club. He and his wife loved to travel and cherished their trip to Italy the most. He retired in 1989 following a fifty year career in which he owned and operated Scholtz Greenhouses. He loved golf, tennis, fishing and especially their time at Ocean Isle Beach. Mr. Scholtz is survived by a daughter, Carol Lee Scholtz Cathey of Charlotte; son, Whitten Walter Scholtz, III and his wife, Betty Lynn of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Darren Wade Moody and his wife, Andrea Christmas Moody, Dennis McCord Moody and his wife, Kerry Dillon Moody, Tracey Elizabeth Moody, Alexandra Barton Cathey, and Lynn Scholtz Roberts and her husband, Jason Mark Roberts; three great-grandchildren, John Wade Moody, Zoe Lynn Roberts and Whitten Grant Roberts; and a sister, Lessie Warren of Sun City, Florida. In addition to his wife, Mr. Scholtz was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Allison Scholtz, sister, Helen Bassett and a grandson, Whitten Walter Scholtz, IV. Funeral services will be Friday afternoon at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service. Entombment will follow in the Sharon Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:30 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home and from 4:00 to 5:00 PM in the afternoon at Sharon Towers. Pallbearers will be the grandchildren. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Lillie Calhoun and Shirley Waddell for their loving care of Mr. Scholtz over the past four years.
