Obituary of Sarah West

Sarah Martin West, 89, widow of John O West, Jr., beloved mother of Jo West Lemmons and Tess West Jones, died the night of Oct. 3, 2009 at CMC Pineville. Mrs. West was born November 1, 1919 in Cowpens S.C. and was raised there. She graduated from Winthrop College and received her masters degree from Southern Seminary in Louisville, Ky. She taught school in Union, S.C. before moving to Dunn, N.C. where she was Director of Religious Education at First Baptist Church and there met her future husband, John West. They married and moved to Charlotte where she worked at St John's Baptist Church. She and her husband were charter members of Providence Baptist Church and years later Carmel Baptist Church. Sarah taught at Queens College for 32 years until her retirement. Her love of teaching was also shared with members of her Sunday School classes at Providence Baptist Church and Carmel Baptist Church. Before moving in with her daughter and son-in-law, the Jones's, she had resided at Plantation Estates for 7 years. Her godly examples, her joyful spirit, her selflessness, and her words of wisdom will be cherished by Jo and Chuck Lemmons, Mt. Pleasant S.C., Tess and Bobby Jones, Charlotte; grandchildren: Sarah Lemmons, Washington D.C., John Sullivan-West Lemmons, Mt. Pleasant S.C., Eric Oliver Jones and wife, Shelly, Matthew Jones and wife, Ashley, and Meredith Martin Jones, all of Charlotte; great grandchildren Elliot and Isabelle West Jones. A service celebrating Sarah?s life for her family and friends will be at 2:00 pm, Thursday October 8, 2009, at Carmel Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the church service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Building Fund at Carmel Baptist Church, 1145 Pineville Matthews Rd. in Matthews, NC.
