Obituary of Gladys Downs

Gladys S. Downs Mrs. Downs, 93, of Charlotte, NC died October 15, 2009 at Presbyterian Hospital. She was born November 10, 1915 in Lincoln County, NC, one of the seven children of the late Lois and Clyde Smith. She graduated in the 1936 class from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing and was recognized last month at the Alumni Homecoming as the only remaining member of her class. Mrs. Downs practiced nursing for over fifty years. She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-nine years, Jack Downs. They were active members of Avondale Presbyterian Church. She was awarded an honorary life membership of the Presbyterian Women and was part of the original ?Kitchen Crew? cooking for the Men?s Club. Mrs. Downs lived out her life and faith by being a friend and neighbor to everyone. Mrs. Down is survived by her sons, Jim Downs and his wife, Jan of Austin, Texas and John Downs of Greenville, SC. Funeral Services for Mrs. Downs will be 2:00 PM Sunday, October 18, at Avondale Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5:00 until 6:00 PM at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service.
