I was already in the US Attorney's Office when Nicks joined us, and I was fortunate enough to work with him until I retired in 2007. What an asset to our office! We could always count on him to "lighten it up" before things got too serious. He was a very special man.

To John and Lee and all the Williams family. I was a year behind Nicky at CMA and recall his seemingly constant smile. He was a good athlete, student and cadet. I remember him as a friendly guy and am sure he spread happiness throughout his family and work peers. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with all Nicky's brothers and mother, wife and children, and all of the extended Williams family. God Bless!

Lee, John and all the Williams Family. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this sad time. Knowing you all and having your dad as my doctor for many years has made me a better man. Whether we were in class or on the football field Nicky was always smiling and brought smiles to those who knew him. May God comfort you with those memories during this time and always.

US Attorney's Office posted a condolence

Beloved and respected federal prosecutor C. Nicks Williams died on Tuesday,November 3, 2009, doing what he did best: trying a case to a jury. Shortly before closingarguments were to commence, Nicks fell ill and collapsed in the federal courthouse. He wasrushed to Presbyterian Hospital where he passed away surrounded by friends and family.Nicks came to the US Attorney?s Office in 1996 on a one-year detail from hisposition an Assistant Regional Counsel with the Department of Energy. Based on hisexperience with complex environmental issues, Nicks was assigned a number of difficultenvironmental crimes cases. He quickly developed a rapport with state and federalinvestigators. Nicks was reappointed for a second term in 1997 and continued to workprimarily on environmental cases, including a complex matter involving illegal discharge ofhazardous materials into the ground water. During his second year with the office, Nicksbecame the go-to prosecutor for the Secret Service as its role in the investigation of accessdevice fraud expanded into the realm of identity theft. Nicks also agreed to accept2responsibility for a new Department of Justice initiative involving the prosecution ofdelinquent child support cases.Based on Nicks? outstanding performance, he was offered a position as a full-timeAssistant in 1998. Shortly thereafter, Nicks was given a new assignment to head up the?Project Sentry? program to curtail gun violence in schools. Nicks, as the father of threesons, readily accepted the challenge and quickly developed a separate protocol forelementary, middle, and high schools in the district, rivaling McGruff the Crime Dog in itseffectiveness and entertainment value. Nicks spent countless hours speaking to students asonly Nicks could do: with sincerity, humor and candor.Somewhere along the way, Nicks also persuaded management to allow him toassume primary responsibility for the prosecution of National Forrest and Park andReservation cases. With his steady diet of out-of-the-mainstream cases from our nation?sforests and parks, Nicks would grin and introduce himself as the ?Small Crimes? Chief forthe Western District, an appellation that he considered an honor and a privilege.Nicks easily transitioned into the world of illegal firearms cases, violent crimes, andfinally to Organized Crimes/Drug Enforcement Task Force cases. And, when the Officewas restructured leaving a vacancy in two different positions, Nicks volunteered to fillthem both. The result of his altruism was that he carried an incredible caseload, includingthe monthly indictment of between six and a dozen cases, many of which went to trial. Infact, over the last several years, Nicks has averaged at least one trial per month and oftenseveral during the same trial term, all the while maintaining his travels to the Western partof the state to retain his position as the Coordinator for the prosecution of National Forrest3and Park cases. Somehow, Nicks found time to take young law students along to give themthe benefit of his wisdom, experience, and noteworthy trial skills.Never complaining, despite his burdensome caseload, rarely even asking forassistance, and only accepting help with the promise to repay at least two-fold, Nicks wentabout his business as the district?s trial dog cheerfully and diligently. One of Nick?sfavorite lines when asked whether he felt overwhelmed was, ?No, I?m just grateful to behere.? And, despite his numerous contributions to the Office?s mission, he seemed to trulybelieve that he was simply repaying some long-ago repaid debt.No tribute to Nicks would be complete without at least a brief acknowledgment ofhis a tremendous sense of humor, more often than not at his own expense. He was theperennial master of ceremonies at office events, the toastmaster for office farewells, and thegood natured wit who alternated between ?stirring the pot? and poking fun at himself inemails as a means of helping prosecutors retain perspective. And, when it came toshouldering the work, no one was quicker to assist a colleague by covering a hearing or anentire week

Dear Williams family: Please accept our condolences. Nicks was an exceptional person who meant a great deal to many. His creation of the SAE newsletter and reunion did more to bring people together than anything Vanderbilt could ever do. He will be sorely missed.

To Nicky's family, John, Lee & KayKay,Please accept my condolences and prayerful concern as you are going through this difficult time. Elizabeth, I am sorry that we never met, but Nicky and I were the best of friends @ CMA from the 8th grade thru graduation.I played football and basketball with Nicky, John and Lee and Nicky was one tough competitor and just a great guy whom I loved as a dear friend. He always made me laugh. We must have "double-dated" about 50 times through the years. I was going to try to make it up there for the services, but I am going to Afghanistan in a matter of days for a project. I thought about Nicky all day yesterday after getting the sad news. I loved him like a brother and he was such a good friend to me. God Bless you all...I salute my friend, Williams, C.N....rest in peace, my brother.Karl E. Witt

My thoughts and prayers are with all of Nicky's family and friends. I knew Nicky when we were both growing up in Maury County. We became close friends in the late 1960's after he convinced me to be a counselor at a summer day camp he set up on the campus of CMA. He also convinced his cousin, Pat Ross, to be the other counselor. I have to say, that was a unique experience and one of the most fun summers I had. We did a lot of laughing during those 3 months. If anyone could have pulled that kind of entrepreneurship off, it was Nicky. I know how very much he will be missed, and my heart goes out to all of you. He was one of the good ones.
