Obituary of Beatrice Shoemaker

Beatrice Josephs Shoemaker ?Beaty? Mrs. Shoemaker, 96, of Charlotte, died November 17, 2009 at Presbyterian Hospital after a brief illness. She was born on August 23, 1913 in Charlotte, the daughter of the late L.M. Josephs and Emily R. Josephs. Mrs. Shoemaker attended Charlotte public schools and graduated from Central High School. She attended St. Mary?s College. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church for many years. A devoted homemaker, her life centered around her family and her church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Shoemaker was preceded in death by her husband, J. Reid Shoemaker; two sisters, Julia J. Wall and Evelyn Phifer; two brothers, Joe E. Josephs and Alex R. Josephs; and her great-grandson, Samuel Stafford Law Jones. She is survived by her sons, J. Reid Shoemaker, Jr. and his wife, Nancy F. Shoemaker, and Raleigh A. Shoemaker and his wife Kathryn ?Katy? L. Shoemaker, all of Charlotte; two grandchildren, Lindsay S. Jones and her husband, Nathaniel B.P. Jones, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and Raleigh A. Shoemaker, Jr. and his wife, Katherine ?Kate? D. Shoemaker, of Boston, Massachusetts; five great-grandchildren, Elliot A.P. Jones, Elizabeth ?Liza? Kathryn Jones, and Amelia ?Millie? Lindsay Jones, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and Raleigh A. Shoemaker, III and Jane Dowding Shoemaker of Boston, Massachusetts; and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 21, 2009 at First Presbyterian Church, 200 West Trade Street, Charlotte, NC with Dr. William P. Wood and Reverend Katherine Cooke, officiating. Interment will be private at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church. The family wishes to express special appreciation to the staff of Sharon Towers for their loving and attentive care over the last ten years.
