Even in declining health her intellect and interests remained sharp and clear. She is survived by her son, J. William Porter and his wife Susan of Charlotte and her two beloved grandchildren, Katherine G. Porter of Raleigh and Thomas Oliver Porter, II of Chapel Hill. Also surviving are four sisters-in law, Kathryn (Bobby) Porter, Margaret (Paul) Porter, Catherine (Jim) Porter and Bea (Joe) Porter Justis and seven Porter nieces and nephews. Two husbands, Tom Porter and Howard Dayberry preceded her in death. A memorial service will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Shelby on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends at the Church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Teach for America, 315 West 36th Street, 7th floor, New York, NY 10018.
