Obituary of Elvin Cook

Elvin Maxwell Cook, Sr. Mr. Cook, 80, of Charlotte, NC, died Sunday, February 21, 2010. He was a son of the late Lillian and Henry E. Cook. In addition to his parents Mr. Cook was preceded in death by his wife, Helen in 2006. He was a loving and humble man who had a wonderful sense of humor. Mr. Cook was loved by all that knew him and he never met a stranger. He was an active and charter member of Sovereign Grace Presbyterian Church. A former professional boxer, he won the Golden Gloves in the early 1950?s. He also was an avid bowler and loved golf. Mr. Cook was a wine importer and distributor and honored in the 1980?s for bringing fine wine to Charlotte. Mr. Cook is survived by his daughters, Darlene Tucker and husband, Mitchell, of Waxhaw and Teresa Baker and husband, Russ of Charlotte; and two sons, Elvin M. Cook, Jr. and his wife, Angie of Gastonia, and Kenneth Cook and wife, Pam of Charlotte. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Master Sgt. Bryant Billingsley, Shena Avant, April Batchelor, Russ D. Baker, Jr., Christy Scott, Ryan Cook and Jarrett Cook; and great grandchildren, Chad Scott, Haley Avant, Emma Scott, Cody Scott, Hannah Avant, Rusty III and Jackson Baker, and Sarah and Naomi Batchelor; brother, Basil Cook; and sisters, Aleda Lee and Zoe Purser.. Funeral services for Mr. Cook will be Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at Grace Sovereign Presbyterian Church, 3326 Archdale Drive, Charlotte, NC. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd. Memorials may be made to Bethel Colony of Mercy, 1675 Bethel Colony Road, Lenoir, NC 28645.
