Obituary of Roy Shelby

Roy E. Shelby Mr. Shelby, 74 of Stanley, NC and formerly of Charlotte died Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Charlotte, NC. He was born August 17, 1935 in Blaine, TN, son of the late Milton and Lucy Ann Butcher Shelby. Roy was a member of Chapman Memorial Baptist Church and had been a Mason over 50 years. He retired from A.G. Boone Trucking after 30 years of service with over a million miles of accident free driving. Mr. Shelby enjoyed gardening and fishing. His nicknames included the Shuffletown Walking Man and the Candy Man, but his favorite was Papaw by his grandchildren. In addition to his parents Mr. Shelby was preceded in death by his first wife, Glenda in 1994. Survivors include his wife, Mary Shelby of Stanley, NC; sons, Coy Shelby and wife, Sabrena of Weaverville, NC and Doug Shelby of Columbia, SC; daughters, Melinda Shelby of Dallas, NC and Julie Shelby of Asheville, NC; brother, Milton Shelby and wife, Betty Jo; sister, Pearl Patterson; stepchildren; Terry Hallman and wife, Terri, Ricky Hallman and wife, Anita, Rodney Howard and wife, April and Randy Hallman and wife, Angela. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral service for Mr. Shelby will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at Chapman Memorial Baptist Church with the Reverend John Thomas officiating. Interment will follow Forest Lawn West Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, March 23, 2010 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service.
