Obituary of Spencer Herndon

Spencer Herndon Mr. Herndon, 74, of Charlotte passed away on Friday, April 30, 2010. He was born October 2, 1935 in Richmond, County, NC, son of the late Spencer Herndon, Sr. and Emma Smith Herndon. Survivors include his life long friend and Soul Mate Libby Burleson of Charlotte, NC; daughters, Ashleigh Mason and Tammy Miller; brothers, Ray Herndon and wife, Sheila, David Herndon and wife, Diane and Larry Herndon; granddaughters, Alexandra and Sydney Mason and Morgan and Spencer Miller. Also surviving are Gloria, Jack and Benji. We honor the passing of Spence W. Herndon, father, friend, neighbor, colleague, who supported his beloved soul mate, Libby, with his constant love in spite of the great hardships of health and mental temper he had to endure during the last years of his life. Numerous friends who shared his progressive ways of thinking will never forget the historic gatherings that were shared with the late visionary, Mr. William Henry Belk, of the Belk Research Foundation, Charlotte. Today, we look to the future and applaud the way Spence and Libby worked together with friends of diverse backgrounds who shared a common ground in their home. We will always remember his soft, humanistic values. The beautiful sensitivity of their animals framed the home of Spence and Libby which, oftentimes, became a salon for spiritual philosophy and futurism when Henry Belk and I (and numerous friends) would come together in provocative discussions. Spence was found often in the kitchen with a happy smile and a warm food offering to all who would find their way into the warm and resourceful home of Spence and Libby for inspiration and refreshment. On a deeper level, Spence had a unique way of thinking of the Divine Architect of the Universe as his Maker and sought to see the importance of building a bridge between scientific and spiritual thinking that is necessary for meaningful and peaceful answers that the human race needs in the the 21st Century. When I spoke to him about the nature of how we are all planetary pilgrims in a world of vast change and limitation headed towards a new future, Spence asked me to outline for him and his guests how the future of the second coming of Christ would also have to include the second coming of science, namely, the discovery of new worlds and new possibilities of the ongoing nature of human life in a vast and awesome universe. I remember the important discussions I also had with Spence, Libby, Henry Belk, and Rev. David Karl in their home years ago on the importance of healing with sacred expressions from the Word of God found in the original texts of the Bible in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, and the importance of sacred music to control pain and suffering when uttered by a person with severe pain, even one who was skeptical. May the words of King David in Psalm 139, verses 1-18, be held in memory of Spence. Let us all remember that each soul is valued not for the end moment of life?but for what the soul has provided throughout life in service, sacrifice and faith for all humanity according to a much greater time of glory ?when death itself is conquered. May the words of King David remind us that we are here by the Grace and Wisdom of a Loving God of the prophets and apostles who has found His way into our lives to be hopeful of a greater life that will follow this life in the veil of tears. We will treasure you, Spence, and ask that the Divine Eternal Father take your soul into the heavenly family of the Eternal Christ. May God have mercy upon you , and all of us, and bless you in the company of human saints and your beloved friend, Henry Belk, who live in the House of Many Mansions. AMEN The family would like to express their gratitude to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region and especially Lisa, Mike and Katheryn.
