Obituary of Alma Efird

Alma Irene Aaron Efird Alma, 87, of Charlotte, NC passed peacefully on Monday, May 17, 2010. She was born in Lexington, NC on March 7, 1923, the sixth of seven children born to the late Thomas Jefferson Aaron and Essie Shoaf Aaron. She graduated from Lexington Senior High School in 1940. In 1942 she entered the Mercy School of Nursing, graduating in 1945. In 1946 she moved to Albemarle, NC to work as a nurse at Yadkin Hospital. It was there that Alma met the love of her life Edmund (Ed) Franklin Efird. They were married on April 23, 1947 and moved to Charlotte in 1952, where they raised their family. Alma resumed her career as a nurse at Mercy Hospital retiring in 1987. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her six siblings. Alma is survived by her daughters, Kathryn Gray Efird Matthews and her husband, Winston, and Sheryn Elizabeth Efird; grandchildren, Winston Carlie (Lee) Matthews, Jr., and his wife, Winde, and Carla Gray Matthews McCall and her husband, Jody. Her great-grandchildrenare: Sidney Gray McCall, Benjamin Z. McCall, Elizabeth Leigh Matthews, and Rebecca Anne Matthews. The family would like to thank Doctors Avinash D. Shah and Maher S. Agha of Carolina Medical Associates and the staff of the Harris Hospice Unit of Presbyterian Hospital for their love and care. Funeral service will be at 1:00 PM Thursday, May 20, 2010 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2830 Dorchester Place, Charlotte, NC 28209 with The Reverend A.J. Thomas, officiating. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd. Charlotte, NC 28203. Memorials may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church 2830 Dorchester Place, Charlotte, NC 28209 or Holy Angels Nursery, 6600 Wilkinson Blvd. Belmont, NC 28012.
