Obituary of Nick Miller

Nick John Miller Mr. Miller, 80, of Matthews, passed away Tuesday May 18, 2010. Born in Charlotte on March 29, 1930 to the late John George Miller and Pareskevi Lapes Miller, he was raised in Charlotte?s Wesley Heights neighborhood and graduated with Central High?s Class of 1948. Mr. Miller attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, completing his Bachelor?s Degree in Journalism in 1952 after an interruption in his education for service to his country in the United States Army. Mr. Miller married the former Miss Chrisoula Velonis, of Greensboro, NC, while attending law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, class of 1959. Fully engaged in the practice of law at the time of his death, Mr. Miller served as wise counsel and a staunch advocate in the service of his clients and countless philanthropic endeavors. He was meritoriously recognized for fifty years of practice by the North Carolina State Bar. Mr. Miller was a tireless worker in the service of those interests in which he, his wife and four boys were involved. Leading others to citizenship by example, he championed the causes and organizations that called on him to serve including East Mecklenburg High School, Matthews Optimist Club, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, the Mecklenburg County Bar, YMCA Indian Guides, the Matthews Help Center, the American Legion Matthews Post 235 and his beloved Matthews Athletic and Recreation Association at Arthur Goodman Memorial Park. Instrumental in its founding, he served as president and became a Hall of Fame inductee in 2010. Mr. Miller was a devoted member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, serving as the parish?s president twice. He was also a founding member of St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church where he received the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America Medal of St. Paul for outstanding service and commitment. A mentor, father and grandfather figure to so many, Mr. Miller is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Chris, his four sons: John Miller and wife Cheryl of Matthews, George Miller of Charlotte, Evan Miller of Charlotte and Christopher Miller and wife Katy of Columbia, SC, his brother George J. Miller, sister, Presbytera Eva Miller Paul, his grandchildren Nick Miller, Cannon Miller, Peyton Miller, Eva Miller and Helen Miller, his nephew James G. Miller, nieces Marianne and Suzanne Velonis and Janet Miller Rogers, husband Todd, great niece Anna and great nephew Christopher, many God children and cousins. A Trisagion Memorial Service will be held at St. Nektarios Greek Orthodox Church, on Thursday, May 20 at 7:30 pm. The funeral will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, on Friday, May 21 at 11:30 am. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
