Obituary of Naioma Tarleton

Naioma Moore Tarleton Naioma Patra Moore Tarleton died peacefully at Carolinas Medical Center on Saturday, June 19, 2010, afloat on an ocean of grace and love. She was born on September 20, 1918 at New Salem, Union County, N.C. and was the daughter of C.C. Moore and Velna Brewer Moore. She graduated from New Salem High School, attended Woman?s College in Greensboro, and graduated from East Carolina Teachers College. She began teaching at Mingo High School in Sampson County, taught at Fairview High School in Union County and Winecoff High School in Concord, and then taught all subjects for the 8th-grade at New Salem. After eleven years of ?idleness,? she began to teach elementary school at Oakhurst in Charlotte; she taught at Nations Ford Elementary for sixteen years and at Sedgefield Elementary for seven years. She was an educator beyond the classroom with her uncommon wisdom and the model of her life. She was president of the Engineer?s Wives Club in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, president of the P.T.A. and Newcomers Club in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and Superintendent of the Sunday School at First Presbyterian Church there. In Charlotte, she served as president of the Classroom Teachers Association for several years. At Covenant Presbyterian Church, she was an elder, a Sunday School teacher, a Bible Moderator, a Stephen Minister, a Honorary Life Member of Presbyterian Women, and a member of the Hospice Team. She retired from ?running the church? at her 90th birthday party. She was active in and inspired by Al-Anon for more than thirty years. The facts above do not begin to capture the breadth and depth of her love for others, the quality of her relationships, and her enormous influence for good. One of her great gifts was hospitality; she opened her home and her heart to many persons and affirmed how special they were. She was a lover of so much ?God, her family, her church, laughter, beauty, music?.. Her life was marked by the ?fruits of the Spirit? ?love , joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. She was preceded in death by her husband, Brice Tarleton. She is survived by her two sons, Kendall Brice Tarleton and his wife, Betsey Cotter of Seattle and Brent G. Tarleton and his wife, Debra of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Emily Elizabeth Tarleton of Banks, Oregon, William Brice Tarleton and Brendan Patrick Tarleton of Seattle; three brothers, Dwight B. Moore of Charlotte, Kent C. Moore and his wife Dorothy of Hickory, N.C., and Zane M. Moore and his wife Eldena of Greenville, S.C.; numerous nieces, nephews, and relatives, and a host of people she loved. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary of Covenant Presbyterian Church. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Please buy yourself some flowers in her honor and make a charitable contribution to any group you love that serves humankind.
