Obituary of Martha Griffith Belk

Martha Griffith Belk Mrs. Belk passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at Plantation Estates in Matthews, N.C. after a full life. A Charlotte native, Martha was born January 14, 1920, daughter of the late Edgar L. and Janie Lou Griffith. She graduated from Central High School in Charlotte, N.C. where she met and eventually married her one and only true love the late John T. Belk, Jr. She was a phenomenal mother, wife and friend. Martha enjoyed needlepoint, crocheting and was an active member of the Lansdowne Service League, the Eastern Shrine and the Woman's Club of Charlotte but her favorite pastime was being a devoted housewife raising four children. Martha is survived by her daughter, Sandra Beranek and husband Nick; three sons, Tom Belk and wife Debbie, Bill Belk and wife Sandy, David Belk and wife Rebecca. In addition she is survived by her six grandchildren, David Beranek and wife, Trina and Michael Beranek, John Thomas Belk, IV, Heather K. Hunley and husband, Keith, Jeremy Belk and wife, Katie, Justin Looney and two great-grandchildren, Skyler Hunley and Isreal Gibson. The family will receive friends at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. Funeral service for Mrs. Belk will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, August 14, 2010 in the Dilworth Chapel of Hankins and Whittington. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
