Obituary of Richard Holltzclaw

Richard LeGrand Holtzclaw Mr. Holtzclaw, 86 of Shallotte, NC and formerly of Charlotte, NC peacefully passed away August 20, 2010 with his two daughters by his side. One of seven children, Mr. Holtzclaw was born on March 20, 1924 to the late Grover Bascom and Ola Myrtle Benfield Holtzclaw. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by four sisters, Virginia Callahan, Helen Fisher, Pauline Bartlett, Madeline Weinhold and one brother, Grover B. Holtzclaw. He is also preceded in death by his wife Margaret Tanner Holtzclaw in 1963. After losing his wife, Mr. Holtzclaw raised his two young daughters, by himself. Mr. Holtzclaw devoted his life to serving his Lord and Savior and lived an exemplary Christian life. He graduated from Central High School in 1943, where he began an extensive hobby in photography, later creating a business of photographing weddings and family portraits. He had a gifted eye in capturing nature scenes and created many beautiful photographs from all over the world during his international travels with Leica Camera Club. As a Masonic Lodge member, he played the trumpet and tuba in the Shriner Band. An avid gardener, Mr. Holtzclaw planted vegetable gardens, canning and freezing his home grown vegetables. He enjoyed the outdoors and all aspects of nature as well as traveling, cooking and spending time with friends and family. Mr. Holtzclaw is survived by his daughters Pamela Holtzclaw Beyer and husband Paul, Sandra Holtzclaw Camp and husband Michael, granddaughters Kendall Michelle Knight, Halle Tanner Camp, Margo Jayne Camp, and grandson Jordan Michael Camp, great granddaughter Marissa Lienshen Knight; brother, Charles W. Holtzclaw and wife, Mary Lou and numerous nieces, nephews. A service to celebrate his life will be held 11:00 AM Monday, August 23, 2010, in the Dilworth Chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service. The family will receive friends following the service until 1:00 PM.
