Obituary of Maxine Henderson

Maxine P. Henderson passed away on August 26, 2010 after an extended and valiant fight against Alzheimer?s disease. She was born on March 17, 1917 in Winston-Salem, N.C. to Bertie Chick and Herbert Ernest Pusey. After graduating from R. J. Reynolds High School, she received certification as an X-ray technician from the Medical College of Virginia at Richmond. During World War II she was employed at the military hospital in Fort Bragg, N.C. where she met her future husband, David H. Henderson. They were married in Miami, Florida in September of 1942 where he attended the US Army Air Corps Officer?s Training School. After the war they moved to Charlotte where her husband practiced law with his father and brother and where they raised their two daughters and son. Maxine was an active member of the Mecklenburg Legal Auxiliary, the Charlotte Woman?s Club (President and Woman of the Year for 1985-86 and 1987-88), and a Red Cross volunteer. Her adventurous spirit and creative nature permeated all aspects of her life from traveling the world to gourmet cooking, interior design, ballroom dancing, playing the piano, and modeling for Montaldo?s. She was an inspiration to her children. She is survived by her son, David L. Henderson, daughters Anne Henderson and Shep Foley, daughter-in-law Cindy Henderson, son-in-law Peter Foley; grandchildren Patrick Henderson, Brian Foley and Doug Foley; great grandchildren Claudia, Jake, Alexander, Georgia and Meredith Foley; cousin Dot Ross, and her special longtime friend and devoted caregiver, Lucy Reid. The family wishes to give special thanks to the staff of the 3rd floor at Sharon Towers for their compassionate and loving care of our mother. A private service was held for the family. Friends will be received on Tuesday, September 7th from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Sharon Towers, 5100 Sharon Road.
