I had the pleasure of taking two of Mike's courses at UNC-Charlotte as an undergrad student. He very quickly became my favorite professor and remains so to this day.But Mike was more than just an instructor to me. He was a dear friend and mentor. I enjoyed many lengthy conversations with him in the warmth of his office. Simply being around him encouraged me to be the best student, thinker and pragmatist I could. I was overjoyed to overhear him tell a classmate that I was an outstanding student. Even now, almost 10 years later, that thought makes me swell with pride.I've hesitated to post this message because I was afraid that, in my grief, I might not pay this great man the respect his memory is due. But this morning, the time seemed right. I can only add this: I knew both my grandfathers, but the one I most adored died while I was still young; we didn't really have the chance to fully appreciate one another. My other grandfather and I have more or less been at odds since I was a toddler. He is a good man, but he does not understand me.Mike was like a grandfather that knew me, understood me and appreciated me for who I was. I shall forever remember him with love.God bless you, Mike. My most profound condolences to your family. He smiles on you all from Heaven.-Sean

I took his course in Szeged, Hungary in 2004, and I learnt about the sad news while I was looking for his highly useful online course materials for the MA thesis in Philosophy I'm writing recently. He was an outstanding teacher, his lessons were intellectually challenging as well as highly entertaining. I was just reading through the lecture notes for my thesis and remembered all those funny (and demonstrative) examples on ethical problems. His beloved granddaugher was often the main character in these anecdotic examples, he must have adored her, and I'm sorry that he could not live to see her grow up. He was a very kind and friendly person, he even accepted my invitation to the secondary school where I was teaching that time, and gave my students a special English lesson. He - this is my most important personal memory of him - was also a significant person in my that time developing feminism, and not only because he included feminist ethics in his schedule. At that time I was on the standpoint that although I share concerns of feminism, I am not a feminist, but an 'individualist'. It was exactly he who convinced me (during our more informal conversation after the exam) that in this case, in this too-universalistic approach the problem concerning women's situation gets lost - basically he encouraged me to emphasize my feminism. I am particularly grateful for that conversation. Thank you, Professor Eldridge.

I am a German teaching student who took a class with Michael Eldridge at the University of Cologne last summer. I found out about his death while researching the thesis I am writing - in English so that Mike could read it, too. I am really sad, because even though I only took one class with him, he was a really special teacher to me - he asked the right questions and told so many anecdotes about his family and life. I never liked philosophy much before, but he made me think differently and more conscious. My thoughts are with his family right now, whom I - just a random student on a whole different continent - got a glimpse of through his words and teachings. My condolences for you.

Heartfelt condolences to Mike's family for your loss. I was saddened to hear the news from Bill Gavin. Mike was unforgettable for his honestly and forthright manner. He always asked about my chickens before we could talk about anything else. He was a kind man and a gentle soul and he will be sorely missed by many.f

Dr. Eldridge was my professor at Queens College and one of the most impactful teachers I ever had. He was exceptional and even though I haven't seen him in almost 20 years I am so very sad to hear of your loss. Please know my thoughts are with you.

Dear Eldridge family,I am sorry for your loss. I have many memories of Dr. Eldridge from my time as a philosophy major at Queens in the 1990s, and I remember him fondly. I still have my Introductory Logic textbook from a course I took under him and have consulted it several times over the years. He attended an Arlo Guthrie concert I was also attending in Dana Auditorium one fall; I remember seeing him in the audience wearing one of those pinstriped train engineer's caps. Several years ago I was pleased to run into him at a political event in Charlotte when Howard Dean was in town. My thoughts are with you.
