Obituary of Billy Megginson

Billy McLeod Megginson Mr. Megginson, 81, of Charlotte, NC passed away peacefully Saturday, October 2, 2010 at home surrounded by his family. Billy was an avid Carolina Panther fan and original PSL owner. He was born April 1, 1929, In Shelby, NC, and a son of the late L.P. Megginson, Sr. and Margaret B. Megginson. Mr. Megginson was a graduate of Shelby High School, Lenoir Rhyne College, and received an MA in Education from Western Carolina University. In Shelby, he was the second baseman on the 1945 Shelby American Legion World Championship baseball team, and was later inducted into the Shelby Sports Hall OF Fame. At Lenoir Rhyne College, he received a BA and played both football and baseball. During the years 1953-1955, he served as a Corporal in the US Army with the 506th Infantry at Fort Jackson, SC. He received the National Defense Service medal and played on the Army baseball team. After an honorable discharge from the US Army, he was a beloved teacher and coach in North Carolina public schools for 28 years, retiring in 1983. He and his beloved wife were members of the Adult Fellowship class at First United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC for 46 years. Surviving is his wife of 57 years, Diana C. Megginson of Charlotte, NC; son, Keith M. Megginson and wife, Bridget of Waxhaw, NC; Two grandchildren, Patrick Daniel Megginson and Kathryn Rose Megginson; his brother, Dr. LP Megginson, Jr. and wife, Mary Grace of High Point, NC. Also surviving are four nieces and a nephew, and numerous cousins and relatives. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 5, 2010, from 5pm to 7pm at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service. The funeral service will be at 12:30pm on October 6, 2010, in the Dilworth Chapel of Hankins & Whittington and officiated by Rev. Elizabeth Coppedge-Henley, Senior Minister First United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions are sent to Hospice and Palliative Care of the Charlotte Region 1420 E. 7th Street Charlotte, NC 28204 and First United Methodist Church 501 N. Tryon Street Charlotte, NC 28202. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the many doctors and specifically caregivers of CMC Healthy@Home, Comfort Keepers, and the nurses of Hospice and Palliative Care for making his last portion of life comfortable as well as the support given to his family during this time.
