Obituary of Booker Dillard

S. Booker Dillard, M.D. Dr. Booker Dillard, age 88, of Charlotte, NC died October 23, 2010. He was born September 11, 1922 in Draper (now Eden), NC, a son of Dr. George Penn Dillard and Mildred Booker Dillard. He attended the local schools and in 1939 entered Wake Forest College in Wake Forest, NC, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma social fraternity, Gamma Sigma Epsilon honorary chemical fraternity and was president of Gamma Nu Iota honorary pre-medical fraternity. In April, 1943, he entered the Medical College of Virginia and graduated in 1946. During his senior year he was president of Phi Chi medical fraternity. He interned at Charlotte Memorial Hospital (now known as Carolinas Medical Center) in 1946-47 and served two years in the Army Medical Corps at Oliver General Hospital, Augusta, Georgia, being discharged as a Captain. Dr. Dillard returned to Eden as a general practitioner in 1949. He was on the staff of Leaksville General Hospital and served as president of Rockingham County Medical Society. He also served on the board of directors of Home Savings Bank and was a member of the Meadow Greens Country Club. In 1953 he married Linda White Miller of Hickory and decided to specialize in dermatology at the University of Virginia Hospital, completing his residency in 1956. He then moved to Charlotte and enjoyed a busy dermatological practice until he retired in 1988. He was a member of the American Medical Association, the Southern Medical Association, the N.C. Medical Association, N.C. Dermatology Society, the Southeastern Dermatology Association, the South Central Dermatologic Congress, American Academy of Dermatology and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. Dr. Dillard was a member of the Myers Park United Methodist Church, served on the Administrative Board and was active in the Scouting program for many years. He was a member of the Luther Snyder Bible Class. He enjoyed coastal fishing, gardening at his mountain retreat near Blowing Rock and traveling. Dr. Dillard is survived by his three sons; Sam B. Dillard, Jr. and his children: Booker, Alison and Blair; H. Penn Dillard; and David H. Dillard and wife Lisa Ayer Dillard and their daughters; Landon and Megan; and also by seven nieces and nephews. His siblings: Dr. George Penn Dillard, III, Mrs. Anne Dillard Barksdale, and Mrs. Betsy Dillard Gomer predeceased him. A memorial service will be held at Myers Park United Methodist Church on Thursday, October 28, 2010 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends in Jubilee Hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Myers Park United Methodist Church, PO Box 6161, Charlotte, NC 28207-6161 or to Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region, 1420 East 7th St. Charlotte, NC 28204. Members of the Luther Snyder/Ruth Fisher Class will serve as honorary pall bearers.
