Obituary of Andrew Howell

Andrew Austin Howell Andrew Howell, 20, died unexpectedly on October 23, 2010 in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he was a student at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. Born in Franklin, Virginia on January 16, 1990, Andrew was the son of Warren and Maureen Howell of Charlotte, NC. From his earliest days, Andrew was immersed in music, demonstrating a keen observation and attention to musical performances and shows. As he grew, his broad appreciation for all beauty (in nature, music, art and drama) was evident as he emulated in his own way what he saw and heard. Whether he was drawing, painting, singing, or playing, Andrew pursued an artful expression of what he saw was a beautiful world. A participant in the Pensacola Children?s Chorus, the Charlotte Children?s Choir, the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra and the music programs of his churches and schools, Andrew was happiest making music. Andrew studied horn with Bob Blalock of the Charlotte Symphony and spent his summers studying at Brevard Music Center Summer Institute and Festival, the Tanglewood Horn Workshop, and the Chautauqua Music Festival. Most recently, Andrew studied at the Conservatory with Randy Gardner, and was genuinely loved by the students and faculty there. He will be remembered for his love of animals, his charming, gentle and unassuming manner, and for possessing a sophisticated sense of humor. Andrew was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Maurice and Charlotte Giles of Danville, VA. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his loving sister, Clara Howell of Charlotte, NC; grandparents, Don and Christine Howell of San Diego, CA; aunts and uncles, Mark and Debbie Howell of Chicago, IL, Kevin and Cherie Howell of Crescent City, CA, Karen and Tem Mattox of Bakersfield, CA, Donna Giles and Sue Sneddon of Shallotte, NC, Maurice and Cathy Giles of Toano, VA and Richard and Carolyn Giles of Morehead City, NC; and cousins Chris Howell of Houston, TX, Alexis and Eric Howell of Chicago, IL, Israel Howell of Crescent City, CA, Jordan, Kenton, and Graham Mattox of Bakersfield, CA, Taylor Giles of Toano, VA, Stephanie Giles Williams of Charlottesville, VA, Emily Giles of Southport, NC and Erica Giles Stallard of Waynesboro, VA. A memorial service to celebrate Andrew?s life will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, October 29, 2010 in the sanctuary of St. John?s Baptist Church, 300 Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, NC 28204 with Dr. Layne Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM, Thursday evening October 28, 2010 at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd. Charlotte, NC 28203. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials in Andrew's name be sent to the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra, c/o Charlotte Symphony, 301 South Tryon St., Suite 1700, Charlotte, NC 28282.
