Obituary of Jack Allen

John C. (Jack) Allen Jr., 88, passed away October 25, 2010 at his home in Charlotte, NC surrounded by his family. Mr. Allen was born May 10, 1922 in Chesnee, SC, son of the late John and Teula Scruggs Allen. He attended NC State University and Queens College. Mr. Allen served in the Army Air Corp in WWII. He was an executive with Southern Bell Telephone Company for forty four years. A long time member of St. John?s Baptist Church, he was a former Chairman of the Deacons and a Life Deacon. Jack was a former President and Lt. Governor of the Civitan Club, a member of the Telephone Pioneers and a founding member of The Romeos. Following his retirement, he remained active in the community and enjoyed spending time with his family on the lake. In addition to his wife of 63 years, Virginia Bailes Allen, Jack is survived by two sons, John Allen III and his wife, Lynne and David N. Allen and his wife, Kimberly; two grandsons, Neal Allen and Jack Allen IV, all of Charlotte; brother, Jimmie Allen and his wife, Margaret of Denver, NC; sisters, Jean McKellop and Jerrie Martin and her husband, Wylie also of Denver, NC; and many loving nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by a son, James Bailes Allen. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jack Allen will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, October 28, 2010 at St. John?s Baptist Church, with the Reverend Martha Kearse and the Reverend Lee Gray officiating. There will be a reception following the memorial service in Broach Hall at the church. Interment will be private in Sharon Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Mr. Allen?s nephews, Steve McKellop, Mike McKellop, Steve Kent, John Martin, James Martin and Bryan Simmons. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Deacons of St. John?s Baptist Church. Memorials may be sent to Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 E. 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204 or the Building Fund at St. John?s Baptist Church, 300 Hawthorne Lane, Charlotte, NC 28204.
