Obituary of Ella Schatz

Ella Mann Schatz ?Peggy? ?MiMi? Mrs. Schatz passed peacefully into God?s hands early Thanksgiving morning, November 25, 2010, at Carolinas Medical Center, from pneumonia. Born November 13, 1924, as the 4th and youngest child of Robert Friday Mann and Eva McFadden Mann in Charleston, SC, she graduated from Jenkinsville High School where she met her high school sweetheart, Henry Schatz. They were married in 1948, then moved to Charlotte in 1950, and began their family. Peggy was a homemaker who prepared excellent southern meals for her family and loved organizing a party, especially an oyster roast. She was a former member of Carmel Country Club, where she was active in the ?Nine Holers.? Peggy was proud of her pet parakeet, Peter, who she trained to say over 50 words. She was an excellent bridge player, enjoyed antiquing, attending Gamecock football games and traveling the world with Henry. Peggy and Henry were also members of Sea Pines Country Club in Hilton Head, SC, their second home. She loved to have family and friends visit there to golf and crab. She enjoyed sharing her knowledge of the Lowcountry with others, watching the birds and looking for deer and alligators. She is survived by the love of her life, faithful caregiver and devoted husband of 62 years, Henry Charles Schatz, Jr., ?the sweetest man I know.? She also leaves daughter, Susan Schatz McClave and husband John of Charlotte; son Robert Randolph Schatz and wife Diana of Arvada, Colorado; four grandchildren, Kelly Smith, Kevin and Scott McClave, and Harrison Schatz; 6 great grandchildren, with one on the way; a sister in law and a host of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Henry Charles Schatz, III. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 29, 2010, at St. Luke?s Lutheran Church with a private inurnment at 10:30 a.m. for the immediate family. The Reverends Steven Lorimer and Robert Hartley (Peggy?s godson) will be officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Narthex. A reception will be held for Peggy?s many Cypress friends on Monday, November 29, 2010, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at The Cypress of Charlotte, which had been her home for over 10 years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke?s Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 11063, Charlotte, NC 28220-1063 where, Peggy had been a faithful member for over 60 years.
