Obituary of Maurice Hooks

Maurice Wayne Hooks Mr. Hooks, 83, died Monday, December 6, 2010 at Presbyterian Hospital. A Charlotte native, he was born June 15, 1927, son of the late Charlie and Lola Griffin Hooks. Mr. Hooks graduated in 1945 from Harding High School and immediately entered the Navy. Upon his return from the service he entered Charlotte College (now UNCC) and became a member of their first graduating class. He then attended Davidson College from which he graduated in 1952. In 1958, Wayne founded Chair & Equipment Rentals. That company grew into the regions largest special events rental company known today as Party Reflections Inc., which continues to be operated by the Hooks family. Wayne was an active member of First Baptist Church and the Fidelis Sunday School Class. He was 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Excelsior Lodge #261, Scottish Rites Bodies and the Oasis Temple of the Shrine. He was a past Captain of the Oasis Road Runners, past Captain of the Oasis Club Car Unit and a member of the Royal Order of the Jesters. Wayne was a gracious man who will be remembered fondly by all that knew him. He is survived by his loving wife with whom he recently celebrated their fifty-first anniversary, Sue Thomas Hooks; son, Daniel Wayne Hooks and his wife, Margaret of Charlotte; daughter, Maurisa Hooks Beaver of Charlotte; six grandchildren, Dallas Wayne Hooks, Brandon Hooks, Rebekah, Rachel, James and Jonathan Beaver; and a brother, Thearon Hooks of Greensboro, NC. In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Hooks Hinson Funeral services will be 2:30 PM Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Mark Harris and Reverend Michael Cummings officiating. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Boulevard.
