Mr Smith taught my 8th grade social studies class back in 1983 at McClintock jr high in Charlotte. He was always one of my favorite teachers. He had such passion and made the class so much fun. I will never forget his stories of studying JFK and all the tails that went with it. In fact it was because of his interest in JFK that led to my fascination with his assassination and all of the conspiracies as well. I read and wrote about that topic quite often in college- all thanks to Mr Smith and his passion.I moved to Dallas years ago and would take visitors to where Kennedy was shot, always quick to share a story or 2 from Mr Smiths class. He was a great teacher and one that inspired many. I just learned of his passing last night while on Facebook. I am so sorry for your loss but please know what he meant to so many. May God bless you and your family during this time. You are in our thoughts and prayers.Craig Bailey

I'm so sorry to hear of Chip's passing. He was a super genuine guy...an absolute Southern gentleman, if ever there was one. The family is in my prayers, and I'm sure their strong faith will carry them through this difficult time.

So sorry for your loss. Was in Chip's class for UCPS bus drivers & he was an inspiration to me, Had mutual friends Riggins/Rayfield from the NC/SC stateline area. Chip was a wonderful man with a great love for his family as he spoke often of you all with so much love in his voice. I am a better person for having known him for a few days. Was truly shocked to see the notice in the Observer tonight. My sincere condolences to you all. Teresa Autry

I am just finding out about Coach smiths death, I lost touch over the years and didn't know he passed away in 2011. I am deeply saddend to learn of his passing. Coach Smith was my Baseball coach at McClintock Junior High my 9th grade year back in 1984 ( I think ), and he was absolutely the most passionate coach I've ever been around, and he had a big impact on me and my baseball career from that point forward. He was an absolute Southern Gentleman but I was only 15 years old and didn't appreciate or understand just how genuine he really was. I hope his family sees my post, although 7 years late, I am so sorry to hear about his death. May God bless you Coach Smith and your family.
