Obituary of Eleanor Barnhardt

Eleanor Hayes Barnhardt Mrs. Barnhardt died peacefully in Charlotte, N.C. on February 22, 2011. She was born in Charlotte, North Carolina on February 3, 1913, the daughter of Madge Sadler and Robert Griffith Hayes. Mrs. Barnhardt was a graduate of Central High School and Queens College. She was a lifelong resident of Charlotte except while her husband was serving his country in World War II. She was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, a member of the Junior League of Charlotte, the Colonial Dames of America, and the Mint Museum Auxiliary. She married James Harper Barnhardt of Charlotte in 1941. She and Jim were married for 52 years. She is survived by their two sons, James Harper Barnhardt Jr. and his wife, Dorothy and Sadler Hayes Barnhardt and his wife Deborah. Mrs. Barnhardt married Dr. John Munroe Douglas of Charlotte in 2004. Mrs. Barnhardt was preceded in death by her husband, Jim in 1993, her husband John, in 2006; her four brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert G. Hayes Jr. and wife, Mariam, Sadler Hayes and wife, Agnes, Francis Hayes and wife, Margaret, and Alan Hayes and wife, Betty. In addition to her sons and daughters-in-law, is survived by her grandchildren, Kathryn Barnhardt Van Nort and husband, Niklaas, Elizabeth K. Barnhardt, James H. Barnhardt III and wife, Kelley, five great-grandchildren and extended family. She is also survived by her stepsons: Dr. John Douglas and wife, Jan, Jim Douglas and wife, Lou, and Dave Douglas and wife, Kathy and their families. The family will receive friends at Southminster Retirement Community on Friday afternoon, February 25, 2011 from 4:00 until 5:30. Following a private graveside service, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bob Henderson officiating. The family will also receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Queens University at Charlotte, 1900 Selwyn Ave., Charlotte, NC 28207, Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1000 East Morehead Street, Charlotte, NC 28204 or the charity of the donor?s choice. The family would like to express special thanks to the caregivers at Southminster, Covenant Presbyterian Church, Signature Healthcare, Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy for their loving care and support.
