Obituary of Roy Davidson

Roy Aiken Davidson, Sr. Mr. Davidson, 94, of Charlotte, NC went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 10, 2011 while surrounded by his loving family. He was born to Samuel Winslow Davidson and Mary Elizabeth Aiken Davidson on April 4, 1917 in Ranger, Cherokee County, NC. He was the youngest of seven children. When he was 7 years old, his family moved to Gastonia, NC where he lived until moving to Charlotte in 1958. Roy was a highly skilled machinist and tool and die maker in an era prior to computers. During World War II he worked for Goodyear Aircraft Co. in Akron, OH. He continued working with defense contractors during the 1950?s and 1960?s with Douglas Aircraft Co. in Charlotte, NC and Avco-Lycoming of Charleston, SC. He retired from Duff Norton Corp. on April 2, 1982 after 9 1/3 years. Roy was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. As a child he attended Ranger Methodist prior to moving to Gastonia where he attended Faith Methodist. With the move to Charlotte, he joined Dilworth United Methodist Church in 1959. Over the years he has served on numerous committees, including Administrative Board, Council on Ministries and President of the Charles Bowles Sunday School class. Roy continued to be active in the church until the time of his death. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 20 years, Vivian Ham Davidson and all his siblings. Brothers, Harvey Lee,Wayland and Olan; sisters, Myrter Davidson, Carrie Ballard, and Helen Williams Leagan. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Jackie; children, Winifred (Hal) Peeler, Roy Jr. (Jane) Davidson, Stephen (Karen) Davidson and Julian (Debbie) Davidson; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; eight nieces; and eight nephews. A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Davidson will be at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, April 13, 2011 in the sanctuary of Dilworth United Methodist Church, 605 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203 with the Reverend Ben Devoid, officiating. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends, Tuesday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Dilworth United Methodist Church.
