Obituary of Joyce Toomey

Joyce Marie Toomey Ms. Toomey, 88, of Charlotte, NC died on April 26, 2011 at her residence. She was born on December 1, 1922, in Charlotte. She was the ninth of ten children born to Timothy Charles Toomey, Sr. and Maie Phelan Toomey. In her passing goes the last matriarch of the Toomey family. Ms. Toomey was a graduate of Central High School, class of 1942. Shortly after graduating, she went to work for the City of Charlotte operating the city switchboard. Ms. Toomey then transferred to the city water department and finally to the finance department where she retired from in 1985. Ms. Toomey was a member of several organizations including, North Carolina Governmental Retirees Association, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Governmental Retirees Association, Amity Business and Professional Women?s Club. She also enjoyed, horseback riding, bowling, traveling ?road trips? and her main joy in life was visiting family and friends. Ms. Toomey had two great loves during her life; her family and the Catholic Church. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Patrick?s Cathedral and was very proud of the fact that the church building was built with money donated by her uncle, Harry Phelan in memory of his parents. She was active in the church and was a member of the Catholic Daughters and St. Patrick?s Amazing Grays. She is survived by her loving family, nieces, nephews, cousins and their families and many friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 30, 2011 at The Cathedral of St. Patrick,1621 Dilworth Road East, Charlotte, NC 28203. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Charlotte, NC. There will be a visitation Friday evening in the cathedral from 6:00 until 6:30 PM. A vigil service followed by a rosary service will follow. The family will receive friends in the family life center at the church following the rosary.
