Obituary of Virginia Whitesides

Virginia Kane Whitesides Mrs. Whitesides died Thursday, April 28, 2011. She was born June 29, 1924 in Scottdale, Pennsylvania of the late George Kane and Edna Weaver Kane and was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Carl Whitesides, Jr. and brothers Eugene, George, James, Thomas and sister Anne. She received an RN from the Norfolk General Hospital Nursing Program. Virginia earned both a BA in political science and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She was a member of the Charity League, Trinity Presbyterian RAIN team, Rose Society, Charlotte Hospice, Alliance Book Club, PEO Chapter G, Trinity Presbyterian Church (elder) and Myers Park Country Club. She had an excellent mind with an acute intellectual curiosity who was inspired by new ideas and knowledge. Virginia enjoyed reading, bridge, golf and needlepoint. Her greatest joy was her six children and six grandchildren. She was voted wittiest in her high school a gift she shared freely and often with her friends and family. When asked how she took care of all her children, she jokingly answered: "I created organized neglect." Virginia is survived by her children William Carl Whitesides, III. (Terch) and wife Patricia, Elaine and husband Calvin Henderson, Anne and Joe Washam, Margaret Whitesides, Pam Whitesides and Elizabeth Whitesides. Surviving grandchildren are Jennifer Henderson, Lindsey Kessel (Jeremy), Kelly Henderson, Emily Washam, Christopher Washam and Brian Washam. Additionally, she has many surviving nieces and nephews. A service to celebrate her life will be held 2:00 PM Monday, May 2, 2011, at Trinity Presbyterian Church. There will be a reception following the service. The family will receive friends Sunday evening May 1, 2011, from 6 to 8 PM at her home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3115 Providence Rd., Charlotte, NC 28211 or Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East Seventh St., Charlotte, NC 28204.
