Obituary of Ruth Haney

Ruth Harris Haney Mrs. Haney, age 77, died Thursday, April 28, 2011. She was born in Dobson, NC and was one of eight children of the late Major and Emma Harris. She was a graduate of Franklin High School in Mt Airy, NC and the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte, NC with an Associate Degree in Applied Sciences from Sacred Heart Junior College. After obtaining her nursing registration, she practiced in Raleigh, Atlanta, and Charlotte before retiring to become a full-time-mom for her two children. As a mom she extended her activities to include den mother for Cub Scouts, troop leader for Girl Scouts, Sunday school teacher, school nurse volunteer, and all of the other numerous activities done by moms everywhere. For fun, Ruth took up the game of golf and joined a ladies golf group at Carmel Country Club. She served a year as chair of the 9-hole group and then advanced to play with the 18-hole group. Golf was a fun activity which enabled her to play courses from Hawaii to Scotland with her husband, Jim, and close friends. She was an avid reader, as were many of her friends, and they enjoyed exchanging books among themselves and discussing them long before book clubs became common. She was a strong supporter of the Charlotte Public Library and exposed her children to the joy of books through frequent visits there. Other activities that she enjoyed and kept her busy included the Lansdowne garden club, birthday club, first Friday dinner group, and several bridge groups. Ruth will be remembered as a loving and caring wife and mother and a friend you could always count on in times of need. She provided a calm and soothing presence in times of crisis. Ruth is survived by Jim, her husband of 55 years; daughter, Melinda Haney Costa of Arlington, VA; son, Drew of Charlotte, NC; sister, Elizabeth Truesdale and brother, Johnny Harris, both of Mt. Airy, NC; two wonderful and caring sisters-in-law, Betsy Parris and Jackie Harms, both of Charlotte, NC and her beloved English bull dog, Logan. A memorial service will be held at Sardis Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at 3:00PM with Reverend Jane Fobel officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
