Obituary of J. Timberlake

James Franklin Timberlake, Jr. "Frank" Frank Timberlake, 94, of Charlotte, died Monday, May 16, 2011 at the Stewart Health Center at the Cypress of Charlotte. He was born May 6, 1917 in Timberlake, NC, the son of the late James Franklin Timberlake and Jugrette Rogers Timberlake. He grew up on a tobacco farm in Person County with four brothers and four sisters. After graduation from high school, he began his lifetime career in the wholesale grocery business with Thomas and Howard Co. in Columbia, SC. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. At the end of the war, he returned to Thomas & Howard, working in Salisbury, Henderson, and Washington, NC. He moved to Charlotte in 1956 where he was Executive Vice President and General Manager of Thomas & Howard until his retirement in 1982. Frank Timberlake joined Myers Park United Methodist Church when he came to Charlotte. He served his church with dedication as a member of the Administrative Board and the Board of Trustees. He is a past president of the Luther Snyder Bible Class and traveled with mission teams to Mexico and Panama. In later life, he served as church treasurer for a number of years. He was a founding director of the Metrolina Food Bank (now Second Harvest Food Bank), later serving as chairman. He was a long-time member, past president, and Paul Harris Fellow of the Charlotte Rotary Club. He was active with the Salvation Army Boys and Girls' Club and served on the Salvation Army Advisory Board, which honored him with a lifetime membership. Frank enjoyed his membership at Myers Park Country Club, where he was a past president and active member for over fifty years. He enjoyed the game of golf, shooting his age every year for ten years beginning at age 80 and culminating with his first "hole in one" at 90. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Frank will be remembered for his strong work ethic, positive attitude, devotion to family, and zest for life. He is survived by his wife, Ann Johnston Timberlake of Charlotte; three sons, James Barry Timberlake of Boone, NC, Edgar Franklin Timberlake and wife Wendy Timberlake of Alexandria, Minnesota, and Rufus Johnston Timberlake, MD and wife Carmen Timberlake, MD of Portland, Oregon; one daughter Grey Timberlake Brownlow and husband, Robbie Brownlow of Charlotte. He is also survived by his youngest sister, Jugrette Timberlake Whitt and six grandchildren: Timothy Jackson, Danielle Kaynor, Adam Timberlake, Reid Brownlow, Jane Brownlow, and Mac Brownlow, as well as eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Martha King Timberlake and four brothers and three sisters. A memorial service celebrating Frank's life will be held on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Myers Park United Methodist Church with Dr. James Howell officiating. A reception following the service will be held in Jubilee Hall.
