Obituary of Marie Segrest

Marie Corbett Segrest Beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother went to be with her Lord and Savior on her 90th birthday, May 28, 2011. She will be sorely missed by her family and many friends. The daughter of the late John Hall and Mittie Lee Daniels Corbett, Marie was born on May 28, 1921 in Currie, NC. She graduated from Atkinson High School in 1937. At the age of 20, she received a Bachelor?s Degree in Business Administration from Queens College of Charlotte, (now Queens University). On April 9, 1940 Marie met Shecut Davidson Segrest at a square dance in Charlotte. They were married on July 19, 1941 in York, SC. During WWII, Shecut served in the US Army in the South Pacific, while Marie worked for the cause stateside. The first few years they sustained their marriage by writing letters to one another. Marie and Shecut founded a dry cleaning business in 1946. They operated Segrest Cleaners Laundry and Furriers and Segrest Uniform Rental, until 1983, when they sold the businesses and retired. An active church member, Marie taught Sunday school for many years at Park Road Baptist Church and then at Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church. Most recently, she was a member at Sharon Baptist Church. Marie was always happy to help those in need. Marie was an avid duplicate bridge player who attained Life Master Status. She was active in the Charlotte Duplicate Bridge Club for many years where she directed bridge games and gave lessons. After moving to Plantation Estates in 2005, she continued her passion for bridge by organizing duplicate bridge games, inspiring and helping others to become interested in the game. Marie and Shecut loved to travel in North America. They visited all 50 states, Canada and Mexico. They traveled mostly by motor home and often took grandchildren with them on extended summer trips that ranged as far away as Alaska. Marie continued to travel by motor home until 2002, usually taking a friend with her and meeting up with groups of friends she made during her travels. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Segrest was preceded in death by her husband, Shecut Davidson Segrest, in February 1988, son, John Russell Segrest, in February 2000, four brothers and three sisters.
