Obituary of David Brock

David Leland Brock David Leland Brock, of Charlotte, NC, died peacefully at home on Monday, May 30, 2011 after a courageous battle with esophageal cancer. His wife, daughter and son were at his side, holding his hands. He was a few minutes away from 54 years old. David was born in Philadelphia on May 31, 1957, to Bob and Vera Brock and was raised in Ormond Beach, Florida. He graduated from Seabreeze High School before attending the University of Florida, graduating in 1979. He worked in the oil and banking businesses in Houston, and then earned his MBA from Southern Methodist University, before moving to Tampa with MetLife in 1991. It was there he met his wife, Ann Thompson, and they were married in 1993. They had a daughter, Lucy, in 1995 before moving to Charlotte. Their son, Thompson, was born in 1997. David was employed at Wachovia/Wells Fargo for 15 years preceding his death. Dave loved nothing more than his family, and was a tremendously dedicated and devoted husband and father. He loved God and trusted Him throughout his journey on this earth. The Ultimate Florida Gator Fan, he still showed his normal kindness by tolerating his misguided family and friends who went to Carolina, FSU, Alabama or other inferior schools. Very dangerous with a putter in his hands, he loved playing golf with his children and friends, especially while playing at Charlotte Country Club. He loved Wrightsville Beach, and the time he spent with his family on and around the water. Dave had a passion for life that his friends and family appreciated every day. David also believed strongly in giving back to the community, with a special passion for helping the homeless, and was a tireless volunteer in these endeavors. He was a board member of the Men?s Shelter of Charlotte, while also dedicating much of his time to Room in the Inn, the American Red Cross, and various committees and missions of Myers Park United Methodist Church. Recently, the Men?s Shelter recognized him for his commitment to their organization: the David Brock Learning Center will be established in his honor. In addition to his wife and children, David is survived by his parents, Bob and Vera Brock of Ormond Beach; his sister and brother-in-law, Leslie and Terry Yates, and their sons, Brock and Ryan, of Houston, Texas; his brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Jan Brock, and their daughters, Lindsay, Mandy and Casey of Ormond Beach; his wife?s parents, Jim and Meredith Thompson, of Charlotte; his sister-in-law, Lucy Thompson, of Charlotte; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Kristy Thompson, and their children, Wills and Julia, of Charlotte; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He also is survived by two of his favorites, Bailey and Rascal. He was adored by all. The family would like to especially thank Dr. Gary Frenette, Dr. Jonathan Salo, and Dr. Gregory Mitro, as well as all the Hospice caregivers who assisted David in both Charlotte and Wrightsville Beach. A service to celebrate David?s life will be held at Myers Park United Methodist Church at 4 o?clock in the afternoon on Thursday, June 2. Senior minister, Dr. James Howell will officiate. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends in Jubilee Hall at the church. The commitment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family respectively requests that donations be made to Myers Park United Methodist Church, 1501 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207.
