Obituary of Katina Polyzos

Katina Lanara Polyzos Mrs. Polyzos, 87, of Charlotte passed away Friday, June 4,2011 at Presbyterian Hospital with her family at her side. She was born April 23, 1924 in Agrinion, Greece, the eldest daughter of the late Andreas and Olga Lanara. She moved to Charlotte as a newlywed in 1947. She was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral and was active in the Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society. She was also a longtime member of the Daughters of Evrytania, a philanthropic organization, and was recently honored for her dedication and efforts to help others. In addition to her parents Mrs. Polyzos was preceded in death by her husband, Demetrios Polyzos, and her sister, Vasiliki Lanara. She is survived by her children, Helen Clonaris and husband Gerry, Olga Kleto and husband Nick, Nicholaos Polyzos and Andrew Polyzos. She is also survived by grandchildren Brian Clonaris and wife Amy, Jimmy Clonaris, Dina Clonaris, Dean Kleto and fiancée Maricela Katherine Bartis and husband Frank, Jimmy Kleto, Rebekah Polyzos, and one great grandchild, Anastasia Bartis. She is also survived by her brother Nicholaos Lanara, sisters Ourania Lanara, Anastasia Giannakopoulos and Erasmia Tiligada, all of Greece, along with many nephews and nieces. Mrs. Polyzos will always be remembered for her love of her family and church. Special thanks are given to her caregivers Cheryl McNiel, Zeela Andrade, Candice White, Barbara Martinsk, Megan Jenkins and Susan Hawes, who lovingly cared for Mrs. Polyzos the past four years. The family would also like to thank the doctors and staff of the Presbyterian Hospital Coronary Care Unit who served the family with compassion. A Trisagion Service will be held Sunday evening June 5, 2011, at 7:00 PM at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Funeral service with be Monday, June 6, 2011, at Noon at the Cathedral with Father Michael Varvarelis, Father Philemon Patitsas and Father Tommy Vlahos officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family requests that memorials be sent to either the Ladies' Philoptochos Society or the Cathedral Foundation of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, both at 600 East Boulevard, Charlotte, NC 28203.
