Obituary of Owen Schumacher

Owen Oaster Schumacher Mr. Schumacher died June 12, 2011, taking his place in Heaven with his savior, Jesus Christ. He was 100 years old, having been born on February 9, 1911 to Warren and Vernie Schumacher in Sully, West Virginia. Mr. Schumacher is survived by his wife of 69 years, Beryl I. Schumacher, son Robert Schumacher and wife Mary Jane of Greenville, SC, son Larry Schumacher and wife Kathleen of Concord, NC, and son James Schumacher and wife Lisa of Weddington, NC, along with his grandchildren, Jennifer Tristano, Tasha, Sasha, Zachary and Max Schumacher. ?Pap? is now reunited in Heaven with his granddaughter Kara. His great-grandchildren are Autumn and Sophia. He was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters. As a young man in the mountains of West Virginia, Mr. Schumacher worked with his father cutting timber. In 1933, he moved to Parkersburg, West Virginia and in 1942, married Beryl Sellers. He worked as a boilermaker on large, industrial projects in several areas of West Virginia, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina, including the first atomic bomb facility in Oak Ridge, TN. In 1977, they retired to Charlotte, where he enjoyed much golf (shooting his age when he was 87), dancing, gardening and travel. He was active in the seniors group at the Siskey YMCA, participating in water aerobics until age 97. Mr. Schumacher was a member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ on East Boulevard. He was a member of the Mt. Olivet Masonic Lodge 3 in Parkersburg, WV and a member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers and Iron Ship Builders, Local 667 in Charleston, WV. The family will receive friends at First Christian Church, 1200 East Boulevard, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday, June 17. A funeral service will be at the church, 11:00 a.m. Saturday, followed by a lunch reception. Interment will follow in Magnolia Memorial Gardens.
