Obituary of Charles Wood

Charles Lankford Wood ?Charlie? Charlie, 88, of Charlotte, NC died on June 18, 2011 at Lake Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after battling Alzheimer?s for years. Charlie was a native Charlottean, born on March 2, 1923 to the late Wallace Swift Wood and Lydia Lankford Wood. He proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army, stationed in British Columbia and again during the Korean War in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Boxer. Charlie retired from the City of Charlotte Utilities Department in 1982. He was a lifetime member of Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church and a former deacon and Sunday school teacher. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Margaret Allen Wood; one daughter, Lydia Wood Powers and her husband, Tony; and his beloved grandson, Matthew Powers. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 AM, Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Forest Lawn West Cemetery, 4601 Freedom Dr. Charlotte, NC 28208 with Reverend Bobby Morrow of Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday morning from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd. Charlotte, NC 28203. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bill Gupton Mission Fund c/o Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church, 1117 South Blvd. Charlotte, NC 28203. The family would like to acknowledge the dedicated staff of nurses, caregivers, and attendants at Lake Park for their loving and compassionate care to Charlie and his family during his time there.
