Obituary of Nancy Robinson

Nancy Elizabeth Robinson Nancy Elizabeth Robinson (Nan), age 58 went home to be with God on June 26, 2011, after a lifelong struggle with bipolar disorder. Nan was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, great-aunt, and cousin. She was preceded in death by her parents Elizabeth Foster Robinson and Charles Neely Robinson of Lancaster, SC. Nan was born on January 16, 1953 in Lancaster, SC where she grew up. She attended the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, the American University at Aix en Provence in France, and the University of South Carolina where she completed a B.A. in Media Arts. After graduation from the University of South Carolina, Nan served as the Director of Media Arts for the South Carolina Arts Commission. She went on to be cofounder and co-owner of the film company Kingfisher Films where she worked as a screenwriter, producer, and editor. Among her body of work are the documentaries Growing Up With Rockets, and Dizzy Gillespie ? A Night in Tunisia. She later moved to Washington D.C. where she lived for fourteen years. There she worked as a freelance editor in addition to working for the Washington Children?s Museum and The Department of Public Relations at Hood College. Nan moved to Charlotte in 2004 and enjoyed volunteering at the SPCA and the Lesbian and Gay Community Center. Nan fought valiantly against her mental illness, bipolar disorder. She suffered in ways that are hard to comprehend, yet she rose time after time to live her life anew. Her family rejoices that her suffering is over and that she rests with God. Nan is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Peggy and Skip Stansell of Black Mountain, NC, her niece and her husband Neely Stansell-Simpson and David Simpson of Columbia, SC, and her great-niece Sophia Simpson of Columbia, SC. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Lesbian and Gay Community Center of Charlotte, PO Box 33535, Charlotte, NC 28233 and the Greater SPCA of Charlotte, PO Box 77491, Charlotte, NC 28271. A memorial service will be held for Nan at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church in Black Mountain, NC on July 17, 2011 at 3 p.m.
