Obituary of Jeanne Newcomb

JEANNE LILLY NEWCOMB Jeanne Newcomb, 86, of Charlotte, NC passed away peacefully, Tuesday, July 19, 2011. Born December 9, 1924, in Clarksburg, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Stuart Cass Lilly. She graduated with a BA in English from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, OH in 1947 where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. Mrs. Newcomb married Alan Harrison Newcomb on June 25, 1947. She was predeceased by her husband who died October 21, 1966. At the time of his death, he was the Director of Public Affairs at WBTV in Charlotte, NC. In addition to her parents Jeanne was also predeceased by her brother, Dr. John Stuart Lilly. Jeanne has been a resident of Charlotte since 1953. She taught preschool at Carmel Presbyterian Church and worked at the Methodist Counseling Center in Charlotte for fifteen years. A long time member of First United Methodist Church, she was a member of the Adult Fellowship Sunday school class and also taught various Sunday school classes. She was a dedicated member of United Methodist Women, served as circle chair of the Lydia Circle, coordinated the Widows Support Group and worked tirelessly to help establish support systems for aging members. She will probably be best remembered for her humor and sense of fun, for her love of children, and for her commitment to reach out to those in need. She served joyfully. Jeanne is survived by her son, Robert Thomas Newcomb and his wife, Linda of Charlotte, NC; her daughter, Nancy Newcomb Peterson and her husband, John of Apple Valley, MN; her brother, Dr. Ed Lilly and his wife, Charlene of Panama City, FL: three grandchildren, Alan Newcomb of Asheville, NC, Scott Peterson of New York City and Laura Peterson of Madison, WI; a number of nephews and nieces and a dearly cherished great grandson, Rowan. The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the loving and compassionate care Jeanne received from the entire staff at Carriage Club of Charlotte and the 7th floor tower at Carolinas Medical Center. Funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at First United Methodist Church in Charlotte followed by a graveside service in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 23, 2011 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service.
