Obituary of Joy Tivnan

Joy Martele Tivnan Mrs. Tivnan, 68, of Charlotte NC, passed away Sunday July 24, 2011 after a long illness. Born in Conquest, NY on November 29, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Leon VanNorstrand and Marie Noone VanNorstrand; beloved wife of Francis M. Tivnan Jr; and sister of Elinor Spoor, Sylvia Sweetman, and Eva Decker as well as her two brothers, Russell and Wilson, and two sisters, Jean and Mary, who proceeded her in death. In addition to her husband of 45 years, Joy is survived by her two daughters, Catherine Marie Gantt, and husband Charles, of Charlotte, NC; Amy Lynn Alexander, and husband Sean, of Charlotte, NC; and her son, Martin Patrick Tivnan, and his wife Anna, of Charlotte NC. Joy was blessed with seven grandchildren, Charlie, Caitlin, and Caleigh Grace Gantt; Patrick and Caroline Tivnan; and Ashley and Sean Alexander. Joy grew up in Cato, NY with her five sisters and two brothers. She attended Cato-Meridian High School where she graduated in 1959. After High School, she met and married ?Tiv? and they eventually settled in Charlotte, NC with their three children. She was a beloved mother and full time homemaker whose devotion to her family went above and beyond. In her later years, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren at the beach where she was the happiest. Joy enjoyed traveling, visiting with her family, gardening, and reading. Funeral mass will be at 10:00 AM Friday, July 29, 2011 at The Cathedral of St. Patrick, 1621 Dilworth Rd. East, Charlotte, NC 28203. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends Thursday, July 28, 2011 from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd. Charlotte, NC 28203. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 E. Seventh St., Charlotte, NC 28204. We would like to thank all of the staff at Hospice for their guidance and support throughout Joy?s journey, especially Jacque, who was with us to the end.
